Gifford Garden Notes
Flower Shows
by Diane Fagergren
Will winter ever be over? I seem to be very anxious this year and it is only the middle of February. If you are from this neck of the woods, you know that we have been experiencing some very mild temperatures. The snowdrops in my front yard have broken ground and started to bloom. Spring is still a long way off so I guess a trip to the flower show will have to tide me over for now.

Inspiring and frustrating all at the same time. As you wander around the many displays, taking pictures and writing down plant combinations and new cultivars you want to try when you get home, you are transported to a region of lush landscapes and warm summer breezes. Unfortunately, the illusion is blown when you go to leave. You step out the door and the cold winter winds smack you in the face! So, I suggest you back up a few steps, turn around and return to the land of make believe gardens.

This whimsical underwater sea world was created using many different types of cactus and succulents. Pumice stones interspersed between the prickly foliage brought forth the illusion of a coral reef. Add some faux clam shells and coral and you can create a seascape around your pool this summer!

What all of us would have given for a tree house like this one when we were kids? And to be able to look down on such a beautiful perennial border! This garden was full of color and texture.

Time just keeps ticking forward and spring is rapidly approaching again. Soon the bulbs you planted last fall will start pushing their way up through the soil and your gardens will be in bloom once again. I do recommend a visit to a flower show. Go get those creative juices flowing and see what a little inspiration and imagination can do to influence your landscaping this year.
