RESEARCH PROGRAMS

STUDENT PARTICIPATION:
Qualified under-graduate and graduate students do research projects under the supervision of staff members. Fellowships, research assistantships, internships, work-study and volunteer positions are available. IES scientists supervise graduate students in association with several universities.

JOHN S. EATON FELLOWSHIP:
The John S. Eaton Fellowship provides opportunities for scientists to learn procedures in analytical chemistry and other laboratory techniques.

POSTDOCTORAL PROGRAM:
Outstanding young scientists spend two to three years on original research, using the expertise and facilities at IES to gain experience and training.

SUMMER FELLOWS:
Cary Fellowships are awarded to scientists whose careers or heavy teaching commitments make it difficult for them to do independent research.

VISITING SCIENTISTS:
The Institute encourages short- and long-term visits by scientists for collaboration with IES staff.

Doctoral candidate Helen (Thompson) Dijkstra studied the effects of exotic and native vines on forest regeneration. In the IES greenhouse, she was able to mimic a natural setting yet control her experimental variables. Here she saves senescing leaves in bags attached to the parent plants, to ensure accuracy of her total leaf area measurements.
