Welcome to the Buell-Small Succession Study! The BSS is a long-term ecological experiment designed to document succession on released agricultural fields. The study began in 1958 at the Hutcheson Memorial Forest in New Jersey and continues to the present.

The BSS web site was developed as a resource for the public to learn about the study, for scientists to learn about current BSS projects, and to give scientists an opportunity to become collaborators on the project.

Current Funding for the Buell-Small Succession Study is provided by grant DEB97-26993 from the National Science Foundation Long Term Research in Environmental Biology program.
