Just below our feet lies a hidden world populated by various microbial populations also known as the "world's smallest livestock". This microbial "farm" starts the process of breaking down plant and animal material and releasing nutrients into forms that plants can use.
Unfortunately, years of intense use, coupled with frequent applications of inorganic fertilizers and pesticides, have depleted these beneficial organisms from our topsoil. A "brew" of compost tea is chock-full of helpful bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and nematodes held in a liquid suspension. It will rejuvenate soils, especially those that have been under rigorous management.
This section of "Gardening Tips" will help you understand what is referred to as "the Soil Foodweb" and provide useful information on how to use compost tea to enhance plant performance and suppress diseases and pests. Practicing good soil stewardship will preserve our precious topsoil for generations to come. In an era rife with environmental problems, gardeners can still make a difference ... one garden at a time.
"A THING IS RIGHT ONLY WHEN IT TENDS TO PRESERVE THE INTEGRITY, STABILITY, AND BEAUTY OF THE COMMUNITY, AND THE COMMUNITY INCLUDES THE SOIL, WATER, FAUNA AND FLORA, AS WELL AS THE PEOPLE."
-Aldo Leopold
