Fundamentals of Ecosystem Ecology

The Institute of Ecosystem Studies will again offer a short course in ecosystem ecology during the January 2008 Intersession (January 2 through January 18, 2008). This intensive course will cover the concepts, theories, approaches, utility and history of ecosystem ecology, biogeochemical cycles and budgets, ecosystem energetics and trophic structure, and the response of ecosystems to stress and disturbance. The course will include lectures by members of the Institute's scientific staff, and will emphasize critical examination of ideas through extensive readings, group discussions and exercises. Class size will be limited to ~15 students.

The course will be held at the Institute of Ecosystem Studies, in rural Dutchess County's Millbrook, New York. Students should plan to be in residence during the entire course and to devote their full time to this course. Dormitory housing will be available at the Institute. The cost of the course is $650 per student, which includes course fees, materials, and dormitory fees. Students will need to provide their own transportation to and from the Institute and their own meals (kitchens are available in the dormitories).

The course is intended for graduate students in ecology, environmental studies, or related fields. Advanced undergraduates with appropriate background may be accepted if space permits. The course is listed by Rutgers University for 4 credit hours; students may wish to arrange to receive credit for the course through their universities under "special topics," "seminar," or a similar heading. For further information about the course content and eligibility, contact Dr. Stuart Findlay. For other information, please contact Ms. Claudia Rosen.

Applications were received through November 1, 2007 and are now no longer being accepted. The application deadline was earlier than past years in order to give a greater lead time for visa applications by international attendees. If circumstances prevented you from applying and you wish to receive consideration, please contact Ms. Claudia Rosen at the email address above. Decisions about admission to the course will be made by November 14, 2007.

Scientists at the Institute of Ecosystem Studies conduct research on such diverse topics as ecosystem disturbance and recovery, foodweb relations in aquatic and terrestrial systems, the role of plant and animal species in ecosystem processes, and atmospheric chemistry. Information about us can be found at www.ecostudies.org. The Institute's public education program provides outdoor exhibits and adult education, as well as innovative programs for elementary and high school students. The Institute contains state-of-the-art laboratories, computer facilities, and an excellent ecological research library.
