"I came to the Fellowship program without very articulated goals, but with a strong sense that I wanted to contribute to ecology education. I knew specifically that I wanted to hone my teaching skills and gain confidence in expressing myself and engaging children and adults in ecology. When I reflect on all the children I've had the pleasure to teach (and learn from), how my ideas have developed and changed, and how optimistic and excited I am about the challenge of making ecology useful and understandable for everyone, I realize that my time here has been incredibly influential."
2001 - 2002 Ecology Education Fellow
The Ecology Education Fellowship Program, begun in 1996, gives new educators a chance to develop their ecology teaching skills. Ecology Education Fellows are AmeriCorps members with the Youth Resource Development Corporation Building Bridges AmeriCorps Program or the Student Conservation Association Hudson Valley Program and serve terms that vary in length from three months to two years. Fellows have usually completed their undergraduate degrees in science or education, though some are currently enrolled in school and receive undergraduate or graduate credit for their Fellowship work. Fellows receive a stipend and education award. They participate in all aspects of the Ecology Field Programs and Ecology Day Camps, teaching students, developing curricula, evaluating programs and producing periodic ecology newsletters highlighting the work of K-12 students. Each Fellow develops a portfolio documenting work and growth and completes an independent project.
