Ecology Education Fellows have completed a number of independent projects that have created permanent resources and had lasting impacts on the Education Program and beyond. Likewise, the Fellows have gone on to interesting and rewarding careers, applying and extending what they learned. Some of the Fellows' projects are listed below:
- A 1996 - 1998 Fellow was the lead author on an article published in the Journal of Environmental Education (Vol. 31 No. 3) entitled "Authentic Assessment in the Informal Setting: How It Can Work For You."
- A 1997 - 1998 Fellow worked jointly with us and the nearby Dutchess County Environmental Management Council (EMC) in coordinating the initial phases of the Building Watershed Bridges watershed education and monitoring project. His work with our educators helped establish the Hudson Basin River Watch program throughout the Hudson Valley.
- A 1998 - 1999 Fellow worked with Native Plant Gardener Judy Sullivan and our educators to develop educational materials and programs for the Fern Glen. She went on to work as a project assistant for the Ecology Field Programs and then as a research specialist for the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study.
- A 1999 - 2000 Fellow developed curriculum for older students participating in the Plant Power Ecology Field Program. She also served as one of the lead instructors for the 2000 Summer Ecology Camp and developed a scholarship program that continues to provide funds allowing children from the Poughkeepsie Children's Home to attend camp.
- A 2000 - 2002 Fellow organized and conducted Watershed Studies programs throughout the region, including a program at Arlington Middle School that served 120 students. His other projects included creating a permanent display associated with the Visitor Center's freshwater aquarium and writing an article on the Ecology Education Fellowship program for the newsletter. He then worked as a research specialist for over a year and now serves as a Program Specialist in the Education Program.
- A 2002 Fellow earned a semester's worth of undergraduate credit through her Fellowship. She served as an instructor for Spring Ecology Camp and completed an independent project that involved surveying teachers on their attitudes about environmental education in general and the Ecology Field Programs in particular. She also participated in curriculum development for the Mid-Hudson Urban Ecosystem Studies project. She returned to serve as an instructor for the 2002 Summer Ecology Camp.
- A 2002 - 2003 Fellow developed an after-school and summer program to teach ecology through community gardening in Poughkeepsie, working in collaboration with the Green Teen program at Cornell Cooperative Extension.
