May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month

Cary Institute Research Sheds Light on How Environmental Conditions Influence the Spread of Lyme Disease

Millbrook, N.Y. ― Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne illness in the United States. Humans contract the disease when they are bitten by an infected tick. Symptoms can include headache, fatigue, stiff joints, swollen glands, and a bull’s eye shaped rash.

Millbrook, N.Y -- The Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies’ Board of Trustees recently approved the reappointment of Cary Institute President Dr. William H. Schlesinger for a second three-year term, extending his tenure to 2013. His reappointment was recommended by the 21-member board, which includes leaders in the fields of environmental science, finance, education, and conservation.

Millbrook, NY – Jonathan J. Cole, Distinguished Senior Scientist and G. Evelyn Hutchinson Chair in Ecology at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, has been elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS).

Cole, who has been at the Cary Institute since 1983, is well known for his studies of the carbon cycle and food webs in lakes and rivers.

Where the Wet Things Are

A Community-based Scientific Assessment of Vernal Pools in the Town of Red Hook, N.Y.

Red Hook, N.Y. — Vernal pools are the subject of increased public interest and conservation concern. These seasonal wetlands are small in size and isolated from larger water bodies. Despite playing critical ecological roles—from preventing floods and recharging aquifers to supporting threatened wildlife―vernal pools are often unprotected by state and federal regulations.

Millbrook, N.Y. -- Several nonprofit environmental or conservation organizations in the mid–Hudson Valley may have to eliminate staff or programs if the proposed state budget is passed.

The Black Rock Forest Consortium, the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, and the Mohonk Preserve, all receive annual grants from the state’s Zoos, Botanical Gardens, and Aquaria (ZGBA) Program. These grants, which support educational programs, will be slashed by almost 50 percent under the proposed budget.
