Responses of Michigan SYEFEST Teacher Applicants
Responses of Michigan SYEFEST Teacher Applicants to the question:
"What Currently Limits Your Use of the Schoolyard for Teaching Ecology?"
April/May 1994
- "I think I am limited only because I am unsure of what to do with students on the playground. We have a great playground with an attached piece of county land that would be great for doing ecology activities."
- "I am limited by a lack of information and ideas which I would receive from this class."
- "My limited knowledge of our schoolyard proves to be an obstacle in this case. Also, the minimal schoolyard environment that exists other than playground use causes some restrictions. With the assistance of SYEFEST, I hope to put together multiple uses of our schoolyard. Field work brings the concepts home to our children."
- "Nothing but a usable program. Also, maybe funds to really make our extra playground area more useable. Fencing, bark, manicuring."
- "Lakeshore Elementary is a brand new building that has spent the first year implementing new programs, schedules and ironing out the wrinkles of a new school. With this year behind us, we are ready to take our teaching to higher level of learning and beyond the classroom walls. We currently study a unit on Earth Science, Animal Adaptations, and Earth Environment issues, it would be great to have new ideas and stations related to these subjects in our schoolyard. At this time I need suggestions and ideas in implementing a schoolyard ecology program."
- "Soon - nothing, our school courtyard classroom will be ready in fall. Playgrounds accessible to certain projects."
- "My limit in accomplishing this is my own lack of training and "how to". I would like some time to team with other interested science instructors and brainstorm ways to consciously use my school yard surroundings. Like the children, I still too readily think of the school yard as a playground."
- "I have lots of ideas for using our schoolyard and look forward to SYEFEST to pull those ideas into a workable format."
- "There is a limited amount of unused space. Our maintenance department is not always careful and cooperative with outdoor projects."
- "We have a rather small playground."
