The Trails

Views

  • A Chipping Sparrow obliged by posing as I stepped into the Gifford House gardens today.
  • Buttercups were in bloom along the edge of the Little Bluestem Meadow.
  • White-banded Toothed Carpet Moths were common in grassy areas.
  • A Penstemon colony was on the slope of the Cary Pines Trail.
  • Closer examination explains the common name, Beardtongue.
  • I think this is a mustard family member.
  • It's leaves clasp the stem.
  • A small Cherry tree is easily denuded by an Eastern Tent Caterpillar colony.
  • This blossoming tree was in the Old Gravel Pit.
  • The optical effect of these Ferns is dizzying.
  • Their fronds are a study in chaos theory: the entire frond is composed of similarly shaped frondlets. They, in turn, similarly constructed...
  • A small oak near the turn of the CPT by the Fern Glen was host to several different caterpillars. Here, a Looper (Geometer moth), and here an unidentified acrobat.
  • This interesting bush reminds me of Barberry on closer examination.
  • In the Fern Glen, a Blue Flag was in bloom.
  • The Little Wood Satyr butterfly was in the FG as well as the fields.
  • My guess here is Meadow-Parsnip.
  • And this would be a Ragwort - with Wild Geranium in the background.
  • A Nessus Sphinx moth was investigating the bog, but didn't allow a photo.
  • There was one lone Yellow Iris.
  • Herb-robert is another Geranium family member.
  • Early meadow-rue was going to seed.
  • I'm going to try Greek Valerian for this one.
  • I believe this is Cinnamon Fern gracing the edge of the Pond.
  • After the walk, I found a Wood Tick on me.
  • And even later, at home, I found a male "Deer Tick" (Black-legged Tick).
  • Tick season has started. Follow precautions.
